Welcome to the family.
Figuratively, of course, but that’s how Tyler Hickling and Tierney Hill want you to feel when you book Roadrunner Foods.
“Throughout our company’s journey and evolution, our recipe to success has remained the same: providing great food, with great people,” said Tyler. “Bringing our family to yours."
Founded by Tyler’s parents, Don and Susan Hickling, Roadrunner Foods is a family-owned and operated catering company that has provided culinary experiences across Ontario from the heart of Georgian Bay for over 25 years.
The journey began in 1996 after Don and Susan purchased a 45-foot mobile kitchen for event catering. In the Hickling household, the kitchen table was where they spent a lot of time together talking, celebrating and of course, sharing a great meal, and Don and Susan believed they could bring this feeling of food and family to communities across Ontario.
At the time of purchase, Roadrunner Foods had three events booked. From day one, Susan picked up the phone and called all of the festivals and event organizers across Ontario. Bookings started to fill up quickly, and in no time at all went from three events, to 15, to 30 events the following year. After the second year, Susan no longer had to reach out as the phone rang off the hook. And that’s because Roadrunner's success wasn't just about business – it was about family. Don and Susan, alongside their children Amanda and Tyler, poured their hearts into every dish they served, treating their staff and clients like cherished members of their extended family.
“When we talk about bringing our family to yours we are referring to our amazing team, a combination of many families that have been monumental in the success of Roadrunner Foods,” said Tyler.
Tyler, who practically grew up in the kitchen, recalls his early days as a "free babysitter," lending a hand wherever needed.
"From dishwashing to logistics, I wore many hats," he laughed. "But it was all part of the journey."
Tierney, on the other hand, found her way into the Roadrunner family by chance.
While planning a fundraiser at Lora Bay, she met Susan, who offered her a job almost on the spot. Despite not actively seeking employment, Tierney was drawn in by the warmth and opportunity presented. Starting as an event coordinator, she rose through the ranks, eventually becoming an integral part of the management team.
“She quickly became a member of the family. My parents treated her like a daughter… for better or worse,” Tyler laughed.
As the company continued to grow and evolve over the years, they were always looking to capitalize on other opportunities. A few years ago, that mentality led to the opening of a restaurant in Thornbury, a venture initially embraced with enthusiasm but ultimately reassessed in the wake of unforeseen challenges.
Despite their best efforts, navigating the rhythms of restaurant ownership amidst the backdrop of a shifting industry landscape proved daunting. Yet, from this experience emerged a deeper clarity of purpose, a reaffirmation of their core values, and a renewed commitment to their roots in catering.
"We reassessed our priorities and realized that catering was our true passion," Tyler said. "So we found ourselves drawn back to our roots."
Around the same time, Susan decided to take a step back from the company. Don had passed away a few years prior, and she found herself lacking the same passion. Sensing the need for change, Tyler and Tierney stepped up to take on more responsibility in leading the business forward.
With the restaurant chapter behind them, the duo are rebranding the business to focus on crafting unique culinary experiences, from intimate dinners to corporate lunches. They are currently seeking a commercial kitchen but, in the meantime, are operating out of Tierney's home.
"We want to create memories, not just meals," Tierney said. "Whether it's a family recipe shared in our kitchen or a plant-based creation inspired by travel, every dish tells a story."
Roadrunner Foods is also in the early stages of introducing Plating Hope, a not-for-profit aimed at supporting community initiatives such as before-school programs and hospice care.
"It's our way of giving back," Tyler said.
As Roadrunner Foods Co looks towards the future, their commitment to quality, community, and family remains unwavering. With a shared vision and a passion for creating unforgettable experiences, Tyler and Tierney are writing the next chapter in the Roadrunner Foods saga.
"Our tagline is 're-plated 2024,' and it signifies a fresh start," Tyler said. "One of the things our company has always been great at is making good food, but we haven’t been great at telling that story. Now we’re excited to tell a new story, one plate at a time."
And for those fortunate enough to taste their culinary creations, it's bound to be a delicious journey indeed.
At the end of the day, both Tyler and Tierney are excited to keep exploring food and connecting with the community.
“We get to experience some of the best and happiest moments of people’s lives,” said Tierney. “That’s pretty special."
